Steps to Take When Mature Soybean Seed Quality is Low at Harvest

The issue of low quality of harvested soybean seed arises at locales in the Midsouth every year, and is usually associated with an extended period of rainy weather concurrent with high temperatures. The resulting dockage at the elevator poses a real threat to producer profits where it occurs.

Dr. Angela McClure, UT Extension Corn and Soybean Specialist, offers some valuable advice (UTcrops News Blog, Oct. 9, 2018) for producers who are dealing with this loss factor. Major points from her article follow.

•   Farmers who are noticing seed damage either during harvest or following rejected loads at the elevator should report the issue to their crop insurance agent as soon as possible.

•   An adjuster should visit an affected field within 24 hours of claim filing to determine the extent of the damage.

•   It is easier to assess damage to make a loss estimate when a portion of the crop is still unharvested in the field.

•   Low yields plus dockage at the elevator likely will trigger an insurance claim for loss.

•   High yields coupled with a lower level of dockage at the elevator likely will not qualify for a loss claim; however, a crop insurance agent will make this determination. Thus, they should still be contacted.

The MSPB supports efforts by both University Extension Services and private industry to train producers on how to grade harvested soybean seed so that they will then be able to report damage for insurance purposes before harvest or delivery to the elevator. This will ensure that any compensation that may be due them for losses due to poor quality of harvested seed will be obtained.
