News You Can Use from PMN

The Oct. 31, 2015 issue of PMN Update has two items of interest to soybean producers.

The first item is a “Focus on Soybean” webcast entitled “Alternative Liming Materials“ presented by Dr. Josh McGrath, Soil Management Specialist at the University of Kentucky.

Soil pH is related to the soil’s ability to supply nutrients to growing plants. Therefore, soil pH management through liming is an important soil management activity that should be a priority for producers, especially those seeking consistently high yields. In his presentation, Dr. McGrath discusses the following topics.

  • Basics and importance of soil pH

  • Relationship of soil pH to lime requirement based on soil characteristics and associated buffering capacity

  • Origin of soil acidity and how it is affected by acid-forming fertilizers

  • Components of lime materials and their relationship to soil acidity reduction

  • Quantification of lime quality based on calcium carbonate equivalent (CCE) and size of limestone particles

  • How CCE and particle size are used to calculate relative neutralizing capacity of limestone

  • Liming products

The second item is an article from Syngenta that announces EPA registration of its new fungicide Solatenol, which is a succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI–FRAC code 7) fungicide. For corn, soybeans, and wheat, Solatenol will be marketed as Trivapro (label forthcoming), a product that contains three distinct active ingredients with three different FRAC codes or modes of action.

In addition to solatenol (SDHI–FRAC Code 7), Trivapro components will be propiconazole (FRAC Code 3) + azoxystrobin (FRAC Code 11). According to Syngenta, the three different modes of action in Trivapro will have no cross-resistance among strobilurins, triazoles, and SDHIs. It is touted as both a preventative and curative fungicide with long-lasting effect. For further details about this new product and the soybean foliar diseases it will control, see Syngenta’s information here, here, and here.
