Value of Soybean Production to Mississippi

According to the latest NASS reports, soybean acreage in Mississippi and soybean’s value of production to the state surpass those of the other major crops combined. The below figures for 2014 tell the story.

Crop Acres harvested* Value of production**
Soybean 2,200,000 $1,269,840,000
Corn 485,000 $385,818,000
Cotton 420,000 $369,613,000
Rice 190,000 $184,658,000
*NASS Mississippi Crop and Stocks Report, Jan. 12, 2015
**NASS Mississippi Crop Values Report, Feb. 24, 2015

These figures indicate that soybean is the major crop in Mississippi in both acreage and value. As such, it seems justified that the state’s public and private agricultural leaders should pay increased attention to and devote increased resources toward addressing the production issues and problems that affect soybean production in the state. This will enhance the crop’s long-term viability for the state’s soybean producers, and ensure the continuation of sustainable production.
