Sampling Soybean Insects using DINSS (Drone Insect Net Sampling System)
Investigators
Objectives
- Test modifications of the current DINSS to increase insect counts per sample. This should decrease the number of samples required to make a management decision, making DINSS more efficient
- Validate DINSS with multiple drones and drone pilots in a wide variety of field situations. This will provide the validation needed to recommend thresholds based on DINSS so they can be used by consultants and growers
- Compare cost and time required to make management decisions using drone-collected defoliation images plus DINSS data versus manual estimates of defoliation plus conventional sweep net data. This will enable consultants and growers to estimate the value of DINSS to their situation.
Expected End Results
End products that are anticipated from this research are a recommended drone-powered sampling tool (potentially covered by a patent), insect action thresholds based on DINSS published in the Insect Control Guide.
