Grow Yields to Grow Your Wallet
Even though planting is well underway for many soybean farmers, it’s important to keep in mind that harvest is just around the corner. Mississippi soybean producers will have even more incentive to push for record yields this year with the introduction of the Mississippi Soybean Yield Contest.
“We’re excited to announce Mississippi’s Inaugural Soybean Yield Contest,” says Paul Dees, chairman of the Mississippi Soybean Promotion Board. “We want those interested to sign up as it plays a significant role in recognizing excellence and finding new soybean-management techniques.”
Information about the contest and necessary forms are available through the Mississippi Soybean Association’s new-and-improved website, www.MississippiSoybeanAssociation.com. The entry period will remain open through August 1, 2017, with all harvest forms due by November 1, 2017. Contest winners will be announced in early November at the Mississippi Soybean Forum.
“This contest is a great way for farmers to learn more about the latest technologies and production practices,” says Jeremy Jack, president of the Mississippi Soybean Association. “It gives participants the recognition they deserve and the opportunity to learn from their peers. These interactions contribute to the overall advances in Mississippi soybean production.”
Winners from each division receive $4,000, and those in second place receive $1,000.
The 2017 Mississippi Soybean Yield Contest will be divided into four divisions:
- Maximum Yield: Irrigated
- Maximum Yield: Dryland
- Maximum Economic Yield: Irrigated
- Maximum Economic Yield: Dryland
John Orlowski, Mississippi State University soybean agronomist, is overseeing the contest.
“We want to recognize both the producers achieving top-end yields as well as the producers maximizing their yields in the most cost-effective ways possible,” says Orlowski. “We are excited about this year’s contest and anticipate expanding in years to come.”
The Mississippi Soybean Yield Contest is funded by the Mississippi Soybean Promotion Board using producer checkoff funds. The contests are administered by the Mississippi Soybean Association in cooperation with Mississippi State University.
