New Auxin Herbicide Application Information

Two articles posted this week by Midsouth weed scientists/specialists provide the latest information about the use of auxin herbicides on auxin-resistant (AR) crops.

Dr. Larry Steckel, Extension Weed Specialist at the West Tenn. Research and Education Center in Jackson, posted an article on the UTcrops.com website that provides an update on using correct nozzles when applying auxin herbicides and on the additional nozzles that have been added to the XtendiMax label. Dr. Steckel’s article provides insight into the use of these newly approved nozzles with these herbicides.

According to Dr. Steckel, the Engenia and XtendiMax websites should be monitored often to keep up with the changes and/or additions in allowed surfactants, tank-mixes, and nozzles.

Click here for EPA-approved tank mixtures for Engenia. Click here for a list of adjuvants and herbicides that can be tank-mixed with XtendiMax and for nozzles that are approved for its application. Pay particular attention to the operating pressures that are allowed for each nozzle type. This is highlighted in Dr. Steckel’s above-cited article.

Dr. Jason Bond, Research/Extension Weed Scientist at MSU-DREC in Stoneville, posted an article entitled “Enlist and Xtend: What Can I Spray and on Which Crops Can I Spray It?” on the MCS blog site. Several points in that article are highlighted below.

Herbicide products that contain 2,4-D will injure or kill Xtend soybean.

Herbicide products that contain dicamba will injure or kill Enlist soybean.

Xtend soybean varieties are not resistant to glufosinate herbicide products.

The herbicides XtendiMax with VaporGrip, Engenia, and FeXapan plus VaporGrip contain only dicamba–they contain no glyphosate.

Herbicide resistance traits in the Enlist Weed Control System confer resistance to glyphosate, glufosinate, and 2,4-D choline. The herbicide labeled for use in this system will by sold with the tradename of Enlist Duo, which is a premix of glyphosate and 2,4-D choline.

Roundup Ready 2 Xtend soybean varieties only have resistance to glyphosate and dicamba; they are not resistant to glufosinate.

Multiple products that contain dicamba–Xtendimax with VaporGrip, Engenia, and FeXapan plus VaporGrip–are labeled for application to Xtend soybean.

Midsouth soybean producers are fortunate to have knowledgeable, dedicated weed science professionals such as Drs. Steckel and Bond to keep them informed about the latest developments in this new area of weed control technology.
