New Soybean Herbicides for 2021
Several new herbicide products are available for soybean producers to use in 2021. These new products are not herbicides with new sites of action, but rather are new herbicide active ingredients, new premixes, or premixes with revised concentrations of existing active ingredients. Click here to access labels for each listed product.
PERPETUO. This herbicide mix from Valent contains flumiclorac-pentyl (Group 14, e.g. Resource) plus pyroxasulfone (Group 15, e.g. Zidua) active ingredients. It is labeled for burndown and residual control of broadleaf and grass weeds in soybean. As a burndown herbicide, it should be applied in combination with labeled burndown herbicides such as dicamba, glyphosate, glufosinate, or 2,4-D. The label lists barnyardgrass, crabgrass, seedling Johnsongrass, fall panicum, Italian ryegrass, Palmer amaranth, and prickly sida (among others) as being controlled by PRE activity of this herbicide product. It can be applied preplant or preemergence up until crop emergence.
REVITON. This new Group 14 herbicide from Helm Agro contains the active ingredient Tiafenacil, and is labeled for preplant burndown weed control in soybean. Soybeans can be planted after 14 days have passed since the application of this PPO herbicide. This product should not be applied by air or through an irrigation system.
KYBER. This herbicide mix from Corteva contains metribuzin (Group 5), flumioxazin (Group 14, e.g. Panther SC and Valor), and pyroxasulfone (Group 15, e.g. Zidua) active ingredients. It is labeled for burndown and residual control of broadleaf and grass weeds in soybean. As a burndown herbicide, Kyber may be tank-mixed with other herbicides that include dicamba, glyphosate, glufosinate, and 2,4-D. Weeds controlled by residual activity of this herbicide include barnyardgrass, crabgrass, seedling Johnsongrass, fall panicum, Italian ryegrass, broadleaf signalgrass, hemp sesbania, marestail, morningglories, Palmer amaranth, and prickly sida (among others). There is no required waiting period for planting soybeans after the application of this product.
ANTARES COMPLETE. This new herbicide mix from Helena contains metribuzin (Group 5), sulfentrazone (Group 14, e.g. Spartan), and s-metolachlor (Group 15, e.g., Dual Magnum) active ingredients. It is labeled for preemergence control of broadleaf and grass weeds in soybean. Weeds controlled include barnyardgrass, crabgrass, fall panicum, broadleaf signalgrass, red rice, Palmer amaranth, morningglories, prickly sida, Pennsylvania smartweed, and sesbania. This product can be applied preplant, preplant incorporated, or preemergence up to 3 days after planting but prior to soybean emergence.
(As noted above, both Kyber and Antares Complete products contain metribuzin, and some soybean varieties are sensitive to this herbicide ingredient. Click here for up-to-date metribuzin sensitivity ratings for many varieties that are available for planting in the Midsouth.)
ZONE DEFENSE. This Group 14 herbicide mix from Helm Agro contains sulfentrazone (e.g. Spartan) and flumioxazin ( e.g. Panther SC and Valor) active ingredients, and is labeled for burndown and preemergence weed control. For increased burndown activity, it may be tank-mixed with other herbicides such as dicamba, glyphosate, and 2,4-D. Weeds controlled by residual activity of this herbicide include crabgrass, fall panicum, Palmer amaranth, morningglories, prickly sida, and seedling Pennsylvania smartweed.
Remember that these newly available herbicide products do not contain active ingredients with new modes of action, and they will not necessarily replace already-available products that will control many of the same weeds as these products do. Consult with/contact your state’s Extension Weed Specialist or your dealer/supplier to determine if the weed control provided by these new products will exceed that of similar herbicide products that are already being used.
