Pest Awareness News
The July 22 edition of the Miss. Crop Situation blog has two articles that soybean producers should check out.
Soybean Disease Update: July 22, 2017 (Updated 7/23/2017) by Dr. Tom Allen. Dr. Allen provides updates on the prevalence of frogeye leaf spot (FLS), septoria brown spot, soybean rust, and target spot on soybeans throughout the state. He recommends that the later-planted crop be scouted for the presence of FLS, and provides guidance on how to ensure that observed leaf symptoms are in fact caused by the FLS pathogen. He provides an update on the location of rust in the state, the likelihood of its moving northward, and how to stay current on the soybean rust situation. For target spot, he discusses how this pathogen appears to mostly affect susceptible varieties, and how the weather in coming days may affect its spread. Redbanded Stink Bug Update 7/21/2017 by Drs. Catchot, Cook, and Gore. These specialists recommend that producers exercise increased vigilance in the coming days as the early-planted soybean crop moves toward maturity. They predict that this pest will move into later-planted soybeans in greater numbers and that reinfestations are likely to happen much quicker behind insecticide treatments. Treatment thresholds and recommended insecticide treatments for this pest can be found on p. 43 of the 2017 Insect Control Guide for Agronomic Crops published by MSU Extension. Particularly pay attention to the preharvest interval for the different insecticide products.
