Soybean Farmers: Turn on the Radio

MSPB’s “Soybean Minute” reports provide daily production solutions for farmers CANTON (July 8, 2013) – Mississippi soybean farmers confront a variety of issues in their fields every year, from weeds to insects to diseases. And through a new program from the Mississippi Soybean Promotion Board (MSPB) and the United Soybean Board (USB), farmers can now hear daily updates on the soybean situation around the state.

Heard on the Mississippi AgriNews Network, “Soybean Minute” reports feature Mississippi State University (MSU) Extension personnel offering recommendations to deal with the issues currently facing soybean farmers or warnings of potential problems that might arise.

“The reports are a great avenue for soybean farmers to receive timely updates on the current situation of the soybean crop around the state,” says MSU Extension Soybean Specialist Trent Irby. “The MSU Extension team provides the reports to help soybean farmers make informed decisions for their fields.” “Soybean Minute” reports air each week at the following times:

  • Mondays: 11:51 a.m., repeated at 12:30 p.m. and 12:51 p.m.
  • Tuesdays: 5:51 a.m., repeated at 6:30 a.m. and 6:51 a.m.
  • Wednesdays: 10:34 a.m.
  • Thursdays: 2:34 p.m., repeated at 3:34 p.m.

Reports focus on timely issues affecting Mississippi soybeans, such as insects, herbicide-resistant weed control and irrigation recommendations. Past reports can be found on the MSPB website, at http://mssoybeanbulk.flywheelsites.com/news/radio-interviews/

“This is obviously a busy time of year for farmers,” says Irby. “For those who don’t always have an opportunity to get the information from various online resources, listening to the report while in the tractor or driving to scout fields can keep farmers aware of what issues others face and receive recommendations on how to handle those problems.” MSPB partnered with USB to create the reports through the Technology Transfer program. Through the program, USB partners with state soy checkoff boards and universities to provide valuable production research information to farmers in an easy-to-use format.
