Biological Control of Bollworms in Soybean, MCS blog, July 24, 2020. Drs. Whitney Crowe, Angus Catchot, Jeff Gore, and Don Cook with Miss. State Univ. provide pointers on biological insecticide use in soybean. They stress the following points when using a common biological such as Heligen: 1) the advantage of using a dynamic economic threshold vs. the standard (static) threshold based on soybean market price; 2) the importance of larvae size when using a biological; and 3) the slower rate of death and its dependence on temperature.
Harvest Weed Seed Destruction, Univ. of Missouri IPM, July 24, 2020. This article by Dr. Mandy Bish of the Univ. of Missouri contains a video narrated by graduate student Travis Winans that shows how weed seed destruction during harvest can drastically lower the amount of viable weed seed that leaves the combine. This ongoing research also quantifies the effect of a combine-attached seed destructor on combine engine load and fuel consumption. Tissue Sampling Tips, Univ. of Minn. Extension, July 22, 2020. Dr. Dan Kaiser with the Univ. of Minnesota provides pointers about: 1) when to sample soybean tissue to determine nutrient status in the plant; 2) which parts of the plant to sample when done at the appropriate time (before R2); and 3) sampling good, marginal, and bad areas of a field in order to compare results from plants in each of these areas. Enlist Duo Registration Upheld, DTN, July 22, 2020. Emily Unglesbee, staff reporter with DTN, provides details regarding the recent decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth District to deny a petition to vacate the registration of Enlist Duo herbicide. This allows producers with Enlist soybean varieties to exercise the option to apply this 2,4-D-choline plus glyphosate premix over 2,4-D-tolerant soybean varieties.
