Information for 2021 Soybean Plantings

Recent posts on www.mssoy.org provide access to updated information than can be used for planning the 2021 soybean crop in the Midsouth. Links to those information sources, along with a brief description of the item(s) contained in them, follow.

A Dec. 9, 2020 FarmProgress article titled Using soybean disease ratings for making 2021 decisions by Dr. Tom Allen, DREC Extension Plant Pathologist, discusses the importance of using varietal disease ratings as a criterion for selecting varieties to plant in 2021. Ratings made on varieties grown in Miss. can be accessed here.

Each year, Univ. of Arkansas Plant Pathologists rate selected soybean varieties for their tolerance to southern root knot nematode (RKN). Click Ratings of Selected Soybean Varieties Against Root Knot Nematode to access these ratings for varieties that were grown on fields in Arkansas that were infested with RKN.

As part of MSPB’s SMART Project, Dr. Trent Irby, Miss. Extension Soybean Specialist, oversees the conduct of a Soybean Variety Demonstration Program at sites across Mississippi. In 2020, 26 sites were located in 16 counties on soil types ranging from loam to clay. MG IV and MG V RR2X and Enlist E3 varieties were grown in the tests at selected locations. The results from those demonstration trials can be accessed here.

Each year, Dr. Irby also publishes a list of soybean variety suggestions for producers to consider when they select varieties for next year’s planting. The varieties suggested in this list are based on their performance in Mississippi Soybean Official Variety Trials. The 2021 Soybean Variety Suggestions (or Variety Short List) can be accessed here.

Another component of MSPB’s SMART Project is Dr. Irby’s ratings of soybean varieties for susceptibility/tolerance to iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC) when grown in tests on known IDC sites in Mississippi. These ratings, including those from 2020 tests, have been appended at the end of the “Iron Deficiency Chlorosis” White Paper that can be accessed here.

Each year, Midsouth states publish Soybean Enterprise Planning Budgets that can be used to estimate costs and returns from various soybean cropping systems in the region. Planning budgets for past years and 2021 can be accessed here.

Each year, Dr. Jeremy Ross, Univ. of Arkansas Soybean Specialist, publishes updates to “Soybean Varieties’ Cross Reference Guide” and “Varietal Screening for Metribuzin Sensitivity”. Producers should keep these lists accessible for when they are selecting soybean varieties for a particular planting/field.

Producers are encouraged to access these sources of information, and use their updated contents where appropriate for planning the 2021 soybean crop.
