GECs vs. GMOs
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) that are derived from transgenic genetic modification (adding gene or genes from another organism) are heavily regulated in most countries. Gene editing is a genetic engineering technique that is used to modify DNA within an organism; i.e. no outside DNA is introduced into the organism's DNA in this process. Thus, gene-edited crops (GECs) are significantly different from those derived from transgenic genetic modification (GMOs) and therefore should be excluded from the requirement of pre-market approval that transgenic GMOs are subjected to.
